I get a strong sense memory from the smell of bleach. My Appalachian grandmother used tankerloads of the stuff (but only "Cloe-rocks") to clean up after floods. To this day a whiff of sodium hypochlorite solution evokes images of my Granny.

As far as removing scratches from just about any type of metal, nothing beats Brasso. I used a lot of it when I was in the army. It's very mildly abrasive, and has a reassuring ammonia bouquet.

I have heard it removes hairline scratches from iPod screens and CDs, too, but do so at your own risk.
